Tattoo placement guide

The same design can look perfect on a forearm and wrong on a ribcage. Placement decides how big the tattoo can be, how much it hurts, who sees it and how it ages. Here is what to think about before you choose.

Forearm and upper arm

The most popular spots. Flat, easy to tattoo, moderate pain and easy to show or cover. Good for vertical designs, animals, lettering and sleeves that grow over time.

Back and shoulder blade

The largest flat canvas on the body. Ideal for big detailed pieces and symmetrical designs like wings or mandalas. Pain is low to moderate, higher over the spine.

Chest and ribs

Chest pieces suit wide, symmetrical designs. Ribs are one of the most painful areas and the skin moves with breathing, so keep lines clean and avoid tiny detail.

Wrist, ankle, hand and finger

Small and visible. Keep designs simple and bold: fine detail on hands and fingers fades quickly because the skin renews fast and gets used all day.

Leg, calf and thigh

The thigh is a large, low-pain area that suits big pieces. The calf works well for vertical designs. Shins and knees hurt more because the bone is close to the skin.

Preview before you decide

Size is the most common regret. In Inkami you place your design on a body photo or your own photo with Try on Body, bend and wrap it to follow the skin, and see it at a realistic size before you book an appointment.

Design it yourself, then send it to your artist

Inkami is a free online tattoo design studio. It is not an AI image generator — you build your design yourself from thousands of real tattoo elements, preview it on your body, and export a print-ready stencil for your tattoo artist.
