How tattoo stencils work

Every tattoo starts as a stencil: a clean line drawing transferred onto your skin that the artist follows with the needle. Understanding how stencils work helps you bring a better design to your appointment.

What a tattoo stencil is

A stencil is the outline of your design, printed or drawn in pure lines — no shading, no color. The artist applies it to your skin with transfer paper and a mild solution, and it stays visible while they tattoo.

Think of it as the map for the tattoo. If the lines on the stencil are clean and complete, the tattoo goes faster and comes out sharper.

Why clean line art matters

A photo or a shaded image cannot be tattooed directly. The artist needs to know exactly where every line goes. Shading, gradients and texture have to be simplified into traceable contours first.

That is why AI-generated tattoo images often disappoint at the studio: they look beautiful on screen, but converting them into lines loses detail or leaves gaps. A design built from real line art avoids that problem completely.

Size and print quality

The stencil must print at the exact size the tattoo will be. A design that looks right on your phone can end up tiny or huge on skin if it is not exported at true size.

Professional stencils are exported at 300 DPI in standard paper sizes like A4 or A3, or thermal-printer width for the machines many studios use.

Line stencils and detailed stencils

A line stencil shows only the contours — the minimum the artist needs to place the design. A detailed stencil also shows the shading as grey areas, which helps the artist plan depth and contrast before they start.

Most artists want both: the line version for the transfer, and the detailed version as a reference next to them while they work.

Make your own stencil in Inkami

In Inkami you build your design from real line-art elements, preview it on your body at a realistic size, and export a print-ready stencil package: the artwork, a pure line stencil and a detailed stencil, at 300 DPI in A3, A4 and thermal sizes.

Download the files or send them straight to your tattoo artist with a private link — they get exactly what they need before you walk in.

Design it yourself, then send it to your artist

Inkami is a free online tattoo design studio. It is not an AI image generator — you build your design yourself from thousands of real tattoo elements, preview it on your body, and export a print-ready stencil for your tattoo artist.
